Uganda Premier League Clubs Push Back Against FUFA’s Proposed Reforms

Tensions have risen between the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and top-flight clubs over proposed league reforms. At a recent meeting, 13 of the 16 Uganda Premier League teams rejected the changes, citing poor consultation, inadequate sensitisation, and insufficient time to prepare.

Vipers SC president Lawrence Mulindwa compared the rushed approach to the sudden introduction of VAT, stressing that clubs had already budgeted under the existing structure.

The dispute escalated when FUFA tied access to the UGX 3.4 billion Competitions Development Fund to adoption of the reforms. Clubs countered that the funds should be released within the current framework, without conditionalities.

FUFA president Moses Magogo described the meeting as constructive, highlighting progress on other issues. However, both parties acknowledged that the league format remains the central unresolved matter, with talks set to continue next week.
