In 2014, the music world lost John Gustafson, a versatile English singer-songwriter and bass player whose career spanned several decades and genres. Born in Liverpool in 1942, Gustafson emerged during the height of the British rock explosion and quickly established himself as a talented musician with a distinctive style. He first gained attention as a member of The Big Three, one of the most popular Merseybeat bands of the early 1960s, which shared the Liverpool scene with The Beatles. He later joined the progressive rock band Quatermass, where his bass playing and songwriting were central to their sound, as well as the hard rock group Hard Stuff. Gustafson’s versatility made him a sought-after session player, and he collaborated with numerous artists across rock, pop, and progressive genres.

Beyond band work, Gustafson became widely recognized for his long stint with Roxy Music, contributing to their influential glam rock sound in the 1970s, and for his role in the Jesus Christ Superstar concept album, where he delivered the powerful rock vocals for the character of Simon Zealotes. Throughout his career, he balanced performing with songwriting, leaving a legacy that influenced both mainstream and underground acts. His death in September 2014 at the age of 72 marked the passing of a musician who was never always in the spotlight but was deeply respected in the industry for his skill, adaptability, and contributions to British rock history.
