The risks of developing metabolic syndrome

Obesity, especially abdominal obesity- Excess belly fat is strongly linked to insulin resistance, a key driver of the syndrome.

Insulin resistance – When cells stop responding properly to insulin, blood sugar levels rise, increasing the risk of diabetes and other complications.

Unhealthy diet – High intake of refined carbs, sugary drinks, processed foods, and trans fats contributes to weight gain, high cholesterol, and high blood sugar.

Sedentary lifestyle – Lack of physical activity worsens obesity, insulin resistance, and poor cardiovascular health.

Age – The risk increases as people get older, though it is now increasingly seen in younger populations.

Genetics and family history – A family history of diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease increases susceptibility.

Hormonal factors – Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women raise the risk.

Chronic stress and poor sleep – Both can worsen insulin resistance, blood pressure, and obesity.
