The new Champions League rules for 2025-26

The 2025-26 Champions League season is the second to take place under a new format.

There are some slight changes to the competition since last season.

TRENDINGBLOG247 Sport take a look at the new rules.

Temporary replacement for long-term injuries

Clubs can replace one outfield player if ruled out by long-term injury or illness.

Applies only until matchday 6 (9-10 Dec).

Aims to stop squads being unfairly reduced & protect players from overwork.

Applies to all UEFA men’s club competitions.

Seeding for quarter & semi-finals

Teams finishing 1st–4th in the league phase will host the 2nd leg of the quarter-finals.

For the semi-finals, only 1st & 2nd ranked teams get this benefit.

If a seeded team is knocked out, their conqueror takes over their seeding path.

Fixes last season’s issue where Arsenal (3rd seed) played decisive legs away.
