Sophie Turner has been announced as the new face of Lara Croft in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series. The British actress, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones and Jean Grey in X-Men, said she was “thrilled beyond measure” to take on the legendary role. Lara Croft, the globe-trotting archaeologist and adventurer, was first introduced in 1996 by British game developer Core Design and has since become one of the most iconic video game characters ever created.

Previously brought to life on the big screen by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, the character will now head to television for the first time. Turner admitted it was “massive shoes to fill” but expressed confidence in the team behind the show. She added: “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many and I am giving everything I’ve got.”
The project is being created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for Fleabag, Killing Eve, and her work on the James Bond film No Time to Die. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that filming will begin in January, marking the first major release under Waller-Bridge’s Amazon deal signed back in 2019.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as creator and co-showrunner, expressed her excitement at bringing Lara Croft to TV. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving,” she said. She will be joined by co-showrunner Chad Hodge (Wayward Pines, Good Behavior) and director Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, The Changeling). Together, they aim to craft a bold new take on the iconic adventurer while staying true to her roots.
Turner has spoken recently about wanting to pursue projects that are “super unique and very niche,” and this role appears to fit the bill. Prime Video executives are also backing the series heavily, with Vernon Sanders, Amazon MGM Studios’ head of global television, calling Lara Croft “one of the most recognisable and iconic video game characters of all time.”
Since its debut, Tomb Raider has spawned numerous sequels, spinoffs, and adaptations, but this marks its most ambitious television project yet. With Turner in the lead and Waller-Bridge overseeing the story, Amazon hopes to capture both die-hard fans of the franchise and new audiences.
As Waller-Bridge teased: “Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara... Get your artifacts out—Croft is coming.”
