Simple 10-second exercise test could predict if you'll die early or outlive your peers

There’s a well-known quick test often discussed in medical and fitness circles: the 10-second one-leg balance test. Research has shown that the ability to stand on one leg for 10 seconds without support is strongly linked to overall health, longevity, and risk of early death. The reasoning is that balance requires good coordination between muscles, nerves, the inner ear, and the brain, systems that tend to decline with age.

A large study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2022 followed more than 1,700 people aged 51–75 for over a decade. It found that those unable to complete the 10-second balance test were nearly twice as likely to die within the following 10 years compared to those who could. While the test itself isn’t a guarantee of lifespan, it’s a simple way to gauge functional health and can serve as a red flag to pay more attention to fitness, strength, and fall prevention.
