On September 5, 2022 – At least 93 people die and 25 are missing after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake strikes Sichuan, China

In September 2022, tragedy struck Sichuan Province in southwestern China when a powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook the mountainous region. The quake, centered in Luding County, caused widespread destruction, collapsing homes, damaging infrastructure, and triggering landslides that buried villages and blocked roads. The tremor was the strongest to hit the area in years, and its impact was especially devastating because of Sichuan’s dense population and the vulnerability of rural, hillside communities. Entire families were displaced, and many survivors were left without access to food, clean water, or shelter in the aftermath.

Authorities launched an immediate rescue effort, deploying thousands of soldiers, medics, and volunteers to search for survivors and provide relief. Helicopters were used to deliver supplies to remote areas cut off by landslides, while rescue dogs and drones aided in locating those trapped under rubble. Despite these efforts, the death toll climbed to at least 93 people, with 25 still missing. The quake also highlighted the region’s fragility, as Sichuan lies on the seismically active Longmenshan fault, the same zone that produced the catastrophic 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. For many, the 2022 disaster was a painful reminder of the constant risk of earthquakes in the region and the ongoing challenge of strengthening preparedness against such natural calamities.
