Nigel Farage has declared that Reform UK will begin preparing for government, promising supporters that his party could soon be in a position to challenge both Labour and the Conservatives. Speaking at the party’s sold-out conference in Birmingham, he claimed that Britain was in political and social turmoil, and that only Reform could address the anger and despair gripping the country. To loud ovations and chants from the crowd, Farage laid out his first vision of a Reform government, vowing to end illegal migrant boat crossings within two weeks, restore stop-and-search policing powers, and scrap net zero climate policies.

The announcement comes despite Reform holding only four seats in the House of Commons, but Farage believes his party’s rising profile and momentum make it a serious contender for power. He pointed to recent local election wins and increasing professionalism within the party as signs of growth. He also predicted that Angela Rayner’s resignation earlier in the day could destabilise Labour, suggesting a national election may come as soon as 2027. Stressing his commitment, Farage said he would give “absolutely everything” to the effort, casting himself as Britain’s last chance to reverse decline.
Farage used the conference to unveil new steps aimed at professionalising Reform UK, including the creation of a “department for the preparation of government.” Former Reform chairman Zia Yusuf will serve as head of policy, while former Conservative minister Nadine Dorries was announced as the latest high-profile defection to the party. Farage said these moves were vital to ensure Reform could be ready to govern before the 2029 election, or earlier if circumstances trigger a snap poll.
The Reform leader also expanded on his key campaign themes. He pledged to repeal human rights laws that block mass deportations, attacked what he called excessive restrictions on free speech, and promised to stop wealthy individuals from leaving Britain by easing financial pressures. Farage also emphasised his international ties, having visited Washington earlier this week where he met Donald Trump and urged US politicians to pressure Britain over free speech restrictions. Prime Minister Keir Starmer criticised him for attacking the UK abroad, calling the move “unpatriotic.”

While Reform has yet to match Labour or the Conservatives in campaign donations and business backing, Farage insisted the party’s ambition was what Britain needed. Closing his speech to music and fireworks, he said the country “needs hope, belief, and to smile again.”
