Newcastle replace Eales with Canadian Hopkinson as CEO

Newcastle United have confirmed the appointment of Canadian David Hopkinson as their new chief executive officer, following the departure of Darren Eales, who stepped down after revealing his cancer diagnosis last year. Hopkinson arrives with a rich background in global sports management and leadership, having spent decades working with some of the biggest franchises across football, basketball, and hockey.

In a statement, Hopkinson expressed his excitement at joining Newcastle, praising the club’s history, passionate fan base, and commitment to excellence. He said he was motivated to help position Newcastle among the world’s elite clubs, building on the progress already made under the ownership of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

His résumé includes serving as President and COO at Madison Square Garden Sports, where he oversaw business operations for NBA side the New York Knicks and NHL’s New York Rangers, two of the most valuable franchises in North America. Prior to that, he worked as Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, one of football’s most valuable clubs, and spent over 20 years at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors.

Newcastle believe Hopkinson’s experience can strengthen the club’s global presence on and off the pitch.

Hopkinson’s appointment marks a significant step in Newcastle United’s continued rise under their current ownership. Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan described him as an “outstanding executive” with a proven track record in elite sport. He said Hopkinson’s leadership will be crucial as the club pushes for both domestic and global success, emphasising his ability to deliver sustainable growth.

Newcastle have already enjoyed progress under the Saudi-led consortium that acquired the club in 2021. The team secured its first trophy in 56 years last season by beating Liverpool in the League Cup final, a landmark moment that underlined their growing ambition. The new CEO is now expected to help translate that momentum into long-term achievement, both commercially and competitively.

By drawing on his international experience, Hopkinson is expected to strengthen Newcastle’s position as a global football brand. His past work in building partnerships at Real Madrid and guiding top-tier North American teams demonstrates his ability to blend sporting success with business expansion.

Fans will be watching closely to see how his leadership shapes the next chapter of Newcastle’s journey. With strong ownership, an ambitious squad, and a clear strategy, Hopkinson’s arrival could prove to be another milestone in the club’s pursuit of elite status.
