Mourinho announced as new Benfica head coach following Lage sacking

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new head coach of Benfica after the club decided to part ways with Bruno Lage. The decision followed Benfica’s shock defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League, a result that ended Lage’s tenure.

At 62 years old, Mourinho has been without a club since leaving Fenerbahce, ironically after their elimination from the Champions League by Benfica. His first match back on the sidelines will come this Saturday when Benfica face AFS in the Liga Portugal.

The Lisbon giants currently sit fourth in the league table with 10 points, five adrift of FC Porto but holding a game in hand. Mourinho’s return represents a homecoming, as he first managed Benfica in 2000 when he succeeded Jupp Heynckes. That spell lasted only 11 matches but included six wins and an unforgettable derby victory against Sporting.

This second chance at Benfica offers Mourinho the opportunity to begin a new chapter where his journey as a head coach first started.

Mourinho’s return also carries a special twist. His first European game with Benfica will be against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the stadium where he rose to global prominence. The draw sets up a symbolic reunion with the club that helped define his managerial reputation.

Since his brief initial stay at Benfica, Mourinho has built one of football’s most decorated careers. He has managed Porto, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce, collecting silverware in nearly every stop.

Among his greatest achievements are league titles in Portugal, England, and Spain, along with two Champions League triumphs, a Europa League trophy, and the UEFA Conference League. His record of lifting major trophies across different clubs has established him as one of the most successful and high-profile coaches in football history.

For Benfica, his appointment signals a new era with the hope of regaining momentum both domestically and in Europe. For Mourinho, it is a sentimental return to the Estadio da Luz, where he will look to combine experience and passion in pursuit of more glory.
