Man City's Marmoush suffers knee injury on Egypt duty

Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush suffered an injury while on international duty with Egypt. The 26 year old was forced off the pitch after just nine minutes during his nation’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso, which ended in a goalless draw in Ouagadougou on Tuesday.

The injury occurred after a heavy challenge in the fourth minute. Although Marmoush initially continued playing following on-field treatment, he was clearly struggling and had to be replaced by Osama Faisal.

The Egyptian Football Association later confirmed that the forward had sustained a bruised knee ligament and shared an image of him leaving the pitch supported by medical staff. They added that the player would undergo an X ray examination upon his return to Cairo on Wednesday morning to assess the extent of the problem.

Marmoush’s situation is now a concern for both Egypt and Manchester City, especially with a busy club schedule ahead. The injury will be closely monitored, and further updates are expected once he has been examined in England by the City medical team.

Omar Marmoush joined Manchester City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for a fee of £59 million and has quickly become a useful attacking option for Pep Guardiola. The Egyptian international has already made 28 appearances and scored eight goals, giving City more flexibility in their forward line.

Recently, Marmoush earned consecutive starts in the Premier League against Tottenham and Brighton, though both matches ended in defeats. Before that, he came off the bench to feature in City’s emphatic 4-0 opening weekend victory over Wolves. His progress has been noted by Guardiola, who has gradually handed him a bigger role in the team.

The timing of the injury is particularly difficult for City, as they prepare to host rivals Manchester United in the highly anticipated Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Marmoush’s potential absence would be a setback as City look to recover from back-to-back league defeats and regain momentum in the title race.

Club medical staff are expected to assess him thoroughly once he returns to Manchester. A clearer picture regarding his availability for the derby, as well as the coming fixtures, should emerge before the weekend. City will be hoping the damage is minimal.
