Ademola Lookman has quickly moved on from a disappointing transfer window to focus fully on Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Rwanda. The African Player of the Year had been keen to leave Atalanta in the summer but a deal never materialised. Still, the 27 year old forward arrived in camp in high spirits and joined training in Uyo on Wednesday as the Super Eagles intensified preparations for Saturday’s match.

The squad was boosted by the presence of Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, who all impressed during the session. Stand in captain William Troost Ekong praised the mood in camp, stressing that the players are united and determined to deliver for the fans. He encouraged Nigerians to fill the stadium, back the team and keep faith ahead of a decisive run of fixtures.
Nigeria are in danger of missing out on the 2026 World Cup after picking up only seven points from seven games in Group C. That leaves them fourth in the table, behind Rwanda, South Africa and one other side. A victory against Rwanda, who currently sit in second place, could revive hopes and put the Super Eagles back in contention.
The stakes could not be higher for Nigeria. The Super Eagles know that anything less than victory against Rwanda would further dent their chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Memories of failing to qualify for Qatar 2022 after losing to Ghana still weigh heavily, and fans are desperate to see the team return to the biggest stage in world football.
Nigeria will count on Victor Osimhen’s firepower, having already scored twice against Rwanda in the reverse fixture. The Napoli striker is in form and will likely be the focal point of the attack again. Lookman’s creativity and pace will also be key, alongside contributions from Iwobi and Bassey. Coach Eric Chelle is preparing his side for back to back tests, with a tough away trip to group leaders South Africa following three days after the Rwanda game.
Troost Ekong has underlined the importance of staying focused and blocking out distractions. He reminded supporters that the team needs full backing from the stands to push them over the line. A win on Saturday would put Nigeria right back in the hunt, while defeat could make qualification for the 2026 tournament almost impossible.
