On the plus side, swimming works nearly every major muscle group while also giving you an excellent cardiovascular workout. The resistance of the water strengthens muscles and builds endurance without putting stress on your joints, making it a great option for people with arthritis, injuries, or mobility issues. It also improves flexibility, lung capacity, and balance, while being low-impact compared to running or weightlifting. Many find it mentally refreshing too, since the water has a calming effect.
That said, it may not be the best for everyone. If your goal is to build significant muscle mass, swimming alone might not provide enough resistance compared to weight training. It also requires access to a pool, which isn’t always convenient. Plus, some people simply don’t enjoy swimming or may not feel comfortable in the water. In those cases, activities like cycling, running, yoga, or strength training might be a better fit.
