French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron have launched legal action against American commentator Candace Owens, accusing her of spreading defamatory conspiracy theories about Brigitte’s identity.

The lawsuit, filed in Delaware in July, alleges that Owens ignored established facts and previous French court rulings while amplifying false claims that Brigitte was secretly born male under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux. Despite multiple legal dismissals of the theory in France, Owens has continued to repeat it across her platforms.
According to the Macrons’ lawyer, Tom Clare, the case will present photographs, testimony, and scientific evidence to conclusively disprove the allegations. Brigitte, who is a mother of three and grandmother of seven, has described the claims as deeply upsetting and harmful.
The Macrons argue that Owens intentionally used the conspiracy to grow her media platform and generate profit, disregarding the truth. Owens has responded by filing a motion to dismiss the case, vowing to fight the lawsuit in court.
The dispute sets up a high-profile transatlantic legal battle with potential implications for defamation law and online misinformation.
