(In UK) Veteran Republican Senator McConnell Warns Trump’s Second Term Could Be Most Dangerous Era Since World War Two

Veteran Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has stirred debate in the United States and the United Kingdom with a stark warning about Donald Trump’s second presidency, calling it “the most dangerous period since before World War II.” In a September 3, 2025, interview with the Lexington Herald-Leader, the 83-year-old Kentucky senator compared Trump’s tariff-heavy policies to the isolationist approach of the 1930s, specifically citing the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which historians say deepened the Great Depression and fueled global conflict. McConnell expressed alarm over America’s lack of preparedness to counter rising authoritarian regimes, including North Korea, China, Russia, Iran, and their proxies.

McConnell, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, criticized Trump’s wavering stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, emphasizing the need to avoid a “Russia wins, America loses” outcome. He noted that over half of the $130 billion in U.S. aid to Ukraine has bolstered domestic industries across 38 states, including Kentucky. While sidestepping personal attacks, McConnell acknowledged tensions with Trump’s allies and defended his legacy, particularly his role in shaping a conservative judiciary. As he prepares to retire in 2026 after over four decades in the Senate, McConnell insisted his record reflects a significant impact on American politics.
