(In UK) Television presenter Jay Blades denies rape charges

 

Television presenter Jay Blades has pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape during a court appearance this week. The 55-year-old, who is widely recognized for hosting the BBC program The Repair Shop, appeared by video link at Shrewsbury Crown Court, where he formally denied the charges.

The court confirmed that a trial will not begin until September 2027, with the lengthy delay attributed to significant backlogs in the criminal justice system. Judge Anthony Lowe expressed regret about the situation, acknowledging that “it’s not a proper justice system where people are having to wait that length of time for their trial.”

A case management hearing has been scheduled for May 15 next year, though Blades will not be required to attend in person. He was also instructed not to make any form of contact with the complainant in the case.

Blades, who appeared in court under his full name, Jason Blades, was granted bail following the hearing. He was previously honoured with an MBE in 2021 for his work in heritage crafts and community projects. However, he stepped back from his role as presenter of The Repair Shop last year amid the ongoing investigation.

The charges against Jay Blades represent a sharp fall from grace for the much-loved presenter, who rose to prominence through his warm and engaging presence on the BBC’s The Repair Shop. Known for his expertise in furniture restoration, Blades became a household name and a symbol of community storytelling. His achievements led to national recognition when he was awarded an MBE in 2021.

Blades has now been placed under strict court orders, including a ban on contacting the complainant, while legal proceedings continue. His trial date in 2027 underscores the challenges facing the UK’s justice system, where delays have become increasingly common due to the backlog of criminal cases. The judge overseeing the case made clear his frustration at the timeline but confirmed that no earlier slot was possible.

The next stage in the process will be a case management hearing in May 2026, which will address procedural matters in preparation for the trial. Blades is not required to attend this hearing in person.

While maintaining his innocence and denying the charges, Blades has largely stepped away from public life. His departure from The Repair Shop last year marked a significant shift in his career as the allegations came under legal scrutiny.
