Green MP Ellie Chowns, who alongside Adrian Ramsay contested the party leadership, has lost out to Zack Polanski, who secured 84.6% of the vote.
Chowns, best known for unseating the Conservatives in North Herefordshire in 2024, was widely regarded as a symbol of the Greens’ growing parliamentary credibility. Her leadership bid, however, was eclipsed by Polanski’s victory, which signals a shift toward a more media-driven “eco-populism” strategy.

While Chowns and Ramsay had championed a gradualist approach focused on building influence through councillors and MPs, Polanski has pledged a bolder, combative direction aimed at expanding the party’s reach more rapidly.
Her defeat has placed Chowns at the centre of internal debates about the Greens’ future direction, as members weigh the risks and opportunities of abandoning incremental growth for a higher-profile national strategy.
