Steele argued that professional sports leagues should show consistency in their responses to national tragedies, calling for tributes and condolences for Kirk similar to those held for Floyd. She noted that while Floyd’s death prompted global protests, widespread moments of silence, and public statements from sports organisations, the reaction to Kirk’s killing has been far more muted.
Although she praised the New York Yankees for holding a moment of silence in Kirk’s honour, Steele criticised other leagues for their silence. Her remarks have reignited debate about how institutions commemorate figures linked to politics and social justice, reflecting broader divisions over race, ideology, and the role of sports in public life.
