On his late-night show, Kimmel accused the “MAGA gang” of exploiting the tragedy for political gain. The remarks triggered swift backlash, drawing the attention of U.S. regulators. Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, publicly warned Disney to take action, after which ABC confirmed that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would be pulled from the air indefinitely.
The fallout has extended beyond ABC, with networks such as Nexstar and Sinclair also dropping the program, citing the offensive nature of Kimmel’s comments.
The suspension has sharply divided opinion. President Donald Trump hailed the move as “great news for America,” while Hollywood figures, free speech advocates, and the Writers Guild of America condemned it as political overreach and censorship. Supporters of Kimmel argue that his comments fall within the bounds of satire and protected expression, whereas critics frame the decision as necessary accountability.
