(In Uganda) Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro Arrest Sparks Political Storm

National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro is trending in Uganda after being arrested and remanded on charges of unlawful drilling and conspiracy.

Mufumbiro, detained alongside Saudah Madaada, claims security operatives pressured him to renounce his support for opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine). He insists, however, that his loyalty lies with Kyagulanyi’s principles of freedom and justice.

The arrest has deepened fears of a political crackdown ahead of Uganda’s 2026 elections, with supporters framing his defiance as a symbol of resistance. Critics, meanwhile, argue the charges of unauthorized military-style drills must be taken seriously.

Mufumbiro maintains his ordeal was meant to silence dissent, a claim that has fueled debate over the government’s handling of opposition voices.
