According to Mkhwanazi, Matlala fraudulently registered his private vehicles as municipal cars and even fitted them with blue lights — privileges that allowed him to move with apparent impunity.

The commissioner further disclosed that the illegal vehicle registrations were facilitated by none other than the Director of Special Services at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), raising serious questions about corruption and collusion within law enforcement ranks.

The revelations add a new dimension to the high-profile trial, casting a spotlight not only on Matlala’s alleged crimes but also on the systemic failures that enabled him to operate above the law.
