The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced it will reopen the inquest into the 1977 death of Steve Biko, leader of the Black Consciousness Movement.
The hearing is scheduled for September 12, 2025 — exactly 48 years after Biko’s death in police custody, where he was fatally beaten by apartheid-era security officers.

Biko’s killing and the subsequent cover-up became a defining moment in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. His funeral, attended by more than 20,000 people, solidified his place as a symbol of resistance and freedom.
The NPA’s move is viewed as part of renewed efforts to address unresolved injustices and ensure accountability for crimes committed during apartheid.
