(In Nigeria) Peter Obi Decries Charity Plea for National Library Project

Nigeria’s political discourse has been ignited by Peter Obi’s sharp response to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s birthday appeal, in which she urged well-wishers to donate towards completing the long-delayed National Library in Abuja instead of spending on cakes or adverts.

Obi praised the intention as noble but condemned the irony of a nation relying on charity to fund its intellectual hub while leaders waste trillions on luxury and vanity projects. Drawing from his tenure as Anambra governor, he recalled redirecting advert funds into schools to support—rather than replace—government responsibilities.

His remarks struck a chord nationwide, fuelling debate about Nigeria’s misplaced priorities. Obi contrasted the neglect of education with lavish spending on private jets, mansions, and endless foreign trips.

He concluded with a stark warning: true progress rests on knowledge and learning, not extravagance—ending his statement with the cutting verdict: “We are finished.”
