(In Nigeria) INEC Recognises New ADC Leadership, Warns Against Premature Campaigns

 


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has updated its official website to reflect the new leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), formally recognising David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.

At the same time, INEC convened a high-level stakeholders’ dialogue in Abuja, where it raised alarm over the rise of premature political campaigns across Nigeria. The Commission warned that aspirants are increasingly exploiting cultural and religious events, as well as social media influencers, to subtly campaign months before the legal window.



INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stressed that Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act provides no sanctions against such early campaigning, leaving a loophole that encourages unmonitored spending and undermines fairness.

He disclosed that the Commission has already engaged National Assembly Committees to push for urgent legislative reforms aimed at closing this gap, ensuring transparency, and safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
