The phrase “Kwaheri Slums” (Swahili for “Goodbye Slums”) has become a rallying point in conversations around President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing Programme. The government initiative aims to replace informal settlements with modern housing while expanding access to affordable mortgages and rent-to-own schemes.
Reports highlight more than 161,000 homes currently under construction, with thousands of families already relocated to new developments. Officials note that the programme has also created housing-related jobs and injected resources into local economies.
