(In Ghana) Kwame Nkrumah Memorial and Founder’s Day Holiday Observed

September 21 marks the commemoration of the birth and legacy of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. The day, also recognised nationally as Founder’s Day, honours the pivotal role Nkrumah played in the country’s independence and nation-building.

In line with national law, since the date falls on a weekend this year, the holiday will be observed on Monday, September 22, as a public holiday across the country.

Nkrumah first served as Prime Minister of the Gold Coast from 1952 until 1957, when the nation achieved independence from Britain. He then became the first Prime Minister and later the first President of Ghana, serving from 1957 until 1966.

The annual commemoration not only reflects on his vision of a united, independent Africa but also continues to spark dialogue about Ghana’s history, identity, and political future.
