Palestine has received a major diplomatic boost after the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally recognised it as a state ahead of the United Nations General Assembly. Leaders from the four nations described the coordinated decision as a step toward strengthening a two-state solution and advancing peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

The move aligns them with more than 145 countries worldwide but has provoked sharp criticism from Israel and the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the recognition as a “reward for terrorism” following Hamas’s October 2023 attack, pledging to expand West Bank settlements.
The U.S., under President Donald Trump, also condemned the recognition, questioning whether it would deliver tangible results.
Palestinian leaders and supporters, however, hailed the decision as a historic breakthrough, one they believe energises global calls for justice, sovereignty, and lasting peace in the Middle East.
