Estonia has requested urgent consultations with Nato allies after Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace for 12 minutes over the Gulf of Finland. According to Estonian officials, the Russian aircraft entered without permission, had their transponders turned off, lacked flight plans and ignored air traffic control. The jets were intercepted by Finnish fighters before Italian F-35s stationed in Estonia escorted them out.
This marks the fifth reported airspace violation by Russia in Estonia this year. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal urged for a united Nato response, stressing that the incursion was another attempt to test the alliance and distract from Russia’s stalled war in Ukraine. Under Article 4 of the Nato treaty, the 32 members will now consult on next steps. It is the second Article 4 request in September, following Poland’s call after Russian drones entered its territory. A Nato spokesperson described the incursion as reckless, while US President Donald Trump warned it could lead to “big trouble.” Russia rejected Estonia’s claims, insisting its jets were on a routine mission and remained over neutral Baltic waters.

The latest airspace breach adds to a series of Russian incursions into Nato territory. Poland recently shot down three drones after 19 entered its skies, while Romania reported detecting a Russian drone near its border. Both nations said the incidents followed Russian strikes on Ukraine. Nato has since strengthened its eastern defences by deploying additional troops and fighter jets from the UK, France, Germany and Denmark.
Russia has denied responsibility, often claiming navigation errors or insisting its forces remain in international airspace. However, Nato leaders believe Moscow’s behaviour is deliberate and meant to pressure allies while continuing its war in Ukraine.
Estonia, which shares a long border with Russia, views these actions as an escalation aimed at forcing Nato members to divert resources away from Kyiv. Prime Minister Michal said Moscow’s incursion underlined how badly its war effort was faltering, with airspace violations used to provoke Western allies.

The incidents have heightened security fears across Eastern Europe. Nato members are preparing further coordinated responses to ensure airspace security and demonstrate collective defence against any further Russian provocations.
