Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has stated that he never sought a ministerial role in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, insisting he would have resigned if appointed.
In an interview with Channels TV, El-Rufai dismissed claims that the Senate rejected him, stressing it was Tinubu’s personal decision. His blunt remarks have renewed debates about his strained relationship with the APC leadership.

He also alleged that the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Governor Uba Sani, and the ICPC orchestrated a smear campaign against him ahead of the 2031 elections. While denying rumours of plans to go into exile, El-Rufai said he intends to focus on private life and business.
Confirming his defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), he cited ideological differences as the reason for his move, sparking wider conversations about Nigeria’s shifting political alignments.
