DON JAZZY (Music Executive of the day)

Don Jazzy, born Michael Collins Ajereh on November 26, 1982, in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria, grew up in Ajegunle, Lagos, where his passion for music started early. Coming from a modest background, he developed a love for traditional and modern sounds while also being influenced by gospel music in church. He attended Federal Government College Lagos and later studied Business Management at Ambrose Alli University in Edo State. By his teenage years, he had already mastered several instruments, including the bass guitar and drums, which became his foundation as a producer.

His musical journey took a serious turn in 2000 when he moved to London to join his uncle, where he worked as a security guard and at McDonald’s while pursuing music on the side. During this period, he met D’banj, and together they began experimenting with sound, eventually birthing a new Afrobeat fusion that blended African rhythms with global influences. Their synergy led to the creation of Mo’ Hits Records in 2004, with Don Jazzy as the behind-the-scenes producer genius and D’banj as the charismatic frontman. The label quickly rose to prominence with hits like “Tongolo” and “Oliver Twist,” which gained international attention.

Don Jazzy’s production style, heavy percussion, catchy hooks, and layered beats, defined an era of Nigerian pop music. Under Mo’ Hits, he nurtured stars like Wande Coal, D’Prince, Dr SID, and K-Switch, helping to shape Afrobeats into a global force. However, in 2012, Mo’ Hits dissolved due to personal and creative differences between Don Jazzy and D’banj. That same year, he founded Mavin Records, which became a powerhouse in the African music industry. Under Mavin, he discovered and launched the careers of artists like Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Di’Ja, Rema, Ayra Starr, and Ladipoe, solidifying his status as a legendary talent builder.

Don Jazzy’s achievements are immense. He has won multiple awards, including Producer of the Year at the Nigerian Music Awards (2006) and Producer of the Year at The Headies (2011). His label has produced countless chart-topping songs, and his contributions to the Afrobeats movement have positioned him as one of Africa’s most influential music moguls. Beyond music, he has ventured into entrepreneurship, with interests in tech, oil, and philanthropy, often supporting young talents and charitable causes.

Unlike many celebrities, Don Jazzy has managed to stay relatively scandal-free. His most notable controversies revolve around the Mo’ Hits breakup and playful social media interactions. He is known for his humorous online persona, often engaging fans with witty posts and memes. Although he has faced public curiosity about his private life, particularly marriage and relationships, he has openly stated that he once got married secretly in his 20s but divorced after two years due to prioritizing music over family life.

Today, Don Jazzy remains one of the most respected figures in African entertainment. He continues to lead Mavin Records, now home to global stars like Rema and Ayra Starr, who are breaking international charts. Known for his humility, mentorship, and visionary approach, he has transformed from a beatmaker in Ajegunle to a global music mogul shaping Afrobeats on the world stage.
