Chagossian activists have referred Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing him of perpetuating crimes against humanity through the recent treaty transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
The activists argue the May agreement denies their right of return, particularly to Diego Garcia, which remains under a UK-US military lease. They claim the deal entrenches decades of forced displacement and continues a pattern of persecution.

The referral, filed under Article 15 of the Rome Statute, names Starmer, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, and Defence Secretary John Healey. It alleges they knowingly facilitated the exclusion of Chagossians by endorsing the treaty.
Led by Bertrice Pompe, who was born on Diego Garcia, the campaigners say the treaty cements colonial-era injustices. While the ICC has yet to decide whether to investigate, the complaint adds pressure ahead of upcoming parliamentary debates and intensifies international scrutiny of Britain’s handling of Chagossian rights.
