Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has been ruled out of action for around three weeks after sustaining a muscle injury during his team’s 3-0 LaLiga victory over Getafe at the weekend. The club confirmed on Monday that the 22-year-old Spain international suffered an iliopsoas injury in his left leg. Lopez, who had come off the bench as a second-half substitute, was forced off late in the match.
It is a setback for both player and club, as Lopez has been in fine form this season. Earlier in the month, he netted twice in Barcelona’s emphatic 6-0 win at Valencia, underlining his importance to Xavi’s midfield options. The timing of the injury is unfortunate, as Barcelona are attempting to keep pace with arch-rivals Real Madrid in the title race.
With Champions Barcelona now sitting two points behind Madrid, Lopez’s absence will limit squad depth at a crucial stage. Barcelona next face Oviedo on Thursday, and Xavi will need other midfielders to step up in Lopez’s absence as fixtures begin to pile up.

The news of Fermin Lopez’s injury comes as Barcelona look to maintain pressure at the top of LaLiga. The 22-year-old has been one of the most promising talents to emerge from the club in recent seasons, combining energy and attacking instincts with technical quality in midfield. His versatility has made him a reliable option for Xavi, both as a starter and impact substitute.
Lopez’s injury is expected to rule him out of several important games, including the trip to Oviedo and potentially upcoming league matches that could be decisive in the early title race. Although the club described the setback as a relatively short-term absence, three weeks without a player of his influence is still a blow for the squad.
Barcelona are also juggling European commitments, meaning rotation and depth are vital. With Lopez sidelined, the responsibility falls to more experienced midfielders to provide creativity and control. For the young Spaniard, the priority will be a full recovery to avoid recurrence. Once fit again, he will look to continue building momentum in what has been a breakthrough season so far.
