Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has defiantly refused to alter his back-three formation, declaring that “not even the pope” could convince him otherwise. Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has faced mounting criticism after recording just seven wins in 27 Premier League games last season, leading United to their worst-ever league finish. This campaign has also started poorly, with only one win in four league matches and a shock League Cup exit to fourth-tier side Grimsby.
Speaking ahead of United’s home clash with Chelsea, Amorim said abandoning his system would weaken his authority in the dressing room. He explained that if he bowed to outside pressure, his players would lose confidence in him as a leader. The Portuguese coach insisted that his tactical approach is a long-term plan and will take time to evolve. United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe recently visited the training ground, but Amorim confirmed that no pressure had been placed on him to change formations. He remains determined to succeed on his own terms, even as results intensify scrutiny on his leadership.

Amorim’s tactical choices have sparked debate, particularly his decision to deploy captain Bruno Fernandes in a deeper midfield role. The Portuguese international had previously thrived further forward, where he contributed goals and assists. Amorim defended his decision, saying Bruno’s deeper position allows him to control matches more effectively and help United retain possession. While acknowledging that Fernandes has less freedom to attack, Amorim argued that his presence still provides value, especially when paired with forward options such as Matheus Cunha.
The manager admitted that Fernandes is frustrated by recent results and occasionally wants to push higher up the pitch, but stressed that “he has a job to do” for the balance of the team. Amorim believes the tactical adjustments are necessary for long-term progress, even if short-term performances have been inconsistent.
Despite criticism from fans and analysts, Amorim insists his philosophy will not change under pressure. He described his system as central to his identity as a coach and signalled that he is prepared to endure tough periods to implement it. For him, the evolution of Manchester United must follow his vision.
