Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has admitted the pressure is mounting as his side prepares for a crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea. United are enduring their poorest start to a league season since 1992-93, and defeat at Old Trafford could put Amorim’s job in serious jeopardy. Speaking to reporters, the Portuguese coach conceded that the club’s struggles stem from a lack of aggression in both penalty boxes. While he believes performances have improved compared to last season, he acknowledged that the inability to finish chances and defend more decisively has cost United against top rivals such as Arsenal and Manchester City.
Amorim also revealed that he met with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who visited the Carrington training ground this week. He joked that Ratcliffe had offered him a new contract but clarified it was simply a show of support and part of ongoing discussions about the long-term project. Ratcliffe, along with other directors, reviewed the team’s data with Amorim, assuring him that despite current struggles, the club remains committed to building steadily under his leadership.

United’s defensive issues have been compounded by the absence of Lisandro Martínez, who has been recovering from injury. Amorim highlighted how much the team has missed the Argentine centre-back, praising his aggressive style and leadership on the pitch. While Martínez has not yet returned, the manager noted that he continues to contribute off the field by attending meetings and training sessions. Amorim stressed that having him back in action will make a vital difference to United’s defensive solidity.
Looking ahead to Chelsea, Amorim confirmed that preparations have focused on analysis and adjustments to improve clinical finishing and defensive concentration. He stressed that United’s underlying numbers such as shots and expected goals are strong, but failure to convert chances and avoid cheap goals has left them exposed. He admitted his team has been “naive” in key moments and must show more ruthlessness to turn performances into results. With pressure growing and fans demanding improvement, Amorim knows Saturday’s clash against Chelsea could be a defining moment in his tenure.
