A look back on some brilliant derbies between Manchester United and Manchester City

 

Sunday marks the 197th Manchester Derby at the Etihad. 

Both sides have had rocky starts this season – perfect time to revisit some classics


September 2009 – United 4-3 City

Michael Owen’s winner in ‘Fergie Time’ capped a chaotic clash. Darren Fletcher’s brace + Craig Bellamy’s double, before Giggs slid Owen through in the 96th minute. Iconic.

February 2011 – United 2-1 City

A game remembered for one moment. Wayne Rooney’s outrageous overhead kick sealed it after Nani & Silva goals. Old Trafford erupted – one of the PL’s greatest goals.


October 2011 – United 1-6 City

Balotelli: “Why always me?” City arrived with a statement win. Goals from Mario, Aguero, Dzeko (2) & Silva humiliated United. Fletcher’s strike a mere footnote.

October 2022 – City 6-3 United

The highest-scoring derby ever. Haaland + Foden both bagged hat-tricks. Antony + Martial scored consolations, but United fans had already left by HT. Pure dominance.


May 2024 – FA Cup Final – City 1-2 United

Garnacho & Mainoo stunned Wembley with first-half goals. Doku pulled one back but United lifted the cup. Ten Hag’s redemption in the biggest stage.

December 2024 – City 1-2 United

Amad Diallo’s late heroics  Won a penalty for Bruno before scoring the 93rd-minute winner. A forgotten season, but a derby night to remember.
