Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has urged the United States to respond firmly if Russian President Vladimir Putin declines to meet him for direct talks. Speaking in Kyiv, Zelenskiy said that he remains open to negotiations but emphasized that any refusal from Moscow should not go unanswered by Washington. According to him, the involvement and backing of the United States is vital in maintaining pressure on Russia and ensuring that Ukraine’s interests are defended at the negotiating table.
Zelenskiy explained that it is still uncertain what Moscow is willing to concede when it comes to territorial questions. He noted that while Ukraine is prepared for dialogue, Russia’s stance remains vague and difficult to read. The Ukrainian leader also mentioned that Budapest had been suggested as a possible site for future talks. However, he described the idea as “challenging,” without elaborating on the reasons. The statement highlights ongoing struggles in setting the stage for meaningful peace discussions. While Ukraine wants talks to continue, Zelenskiy has made it clear that the international community, and particularly the United States, must be ready to act strongly if Russia avoids direct engagement.

Zelenskiy’s call for a strong United States reaction reflects his concern that Russia may be attempting to stall or weaken Ukraine’s negotiating position. By placing responsibility on Washington to react firmly, the Ukrainian president is sending a signal both to Moscow and to his Western allies that Ukraine does not intend to accept symbolic talks or one-sided concessions. This move shows Kyiv’s determination to keep diplomatic pressure high and to avoid being isolated in discussions with Russia.
The uncertainty around Moscow’s territorial stance underscores the depth of the conflict. Russia has previously insisted on recognition of its control over occupied areas, while Ukraine has consistently rejected any loss of territory. Zelenskiy’s remarks suggest that little clarity has been gained on whether Russia is willing to shift its position. His criticism of Budapest as a venue also indicates sensitivity about which countries are seen as neutral or trustworthy hosts for negotiations.

The message to the United States is clear: Ukraine expects more than passive support. Zelenskiy is calling for active involvement and strong backing in order to prevent Russia from dictating the terms. This latest statement underlines that while Kyiv is open to dialogue, it refuses to compromise its sovereignty.
