Today in history – On August 14,2023 Former U.S. president Donald Trump (as of the time) is charged in Georgia along with 18 others in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election in that state, his fourth indictment of 2023

In August 2023, former U.S. President Donald Trump was charged in Georgia alongside 18 other individuals for allegedly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in the state. The case, brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, centered on a wide-ranging racketeering indictment under Georgia’s RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act. Prosecutors claimed that Trump and his co-defendants engaged in a coordinated effort to pressure state officials, recruit fake electors, and spread false claims of election fraud in order to keep him in power despite losing the election to Joe Biden. The most notable piece of evidence was the now-infamous phone call in which Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to overturn Biden’s narrow victory in the state.

This Georgia indictment marked Trump’s fourth criminal case of 2023, following charges in New York related to hush money payments, a federal case over mishandling classified documents, and another federal case alleging election interference nationwide. Unlike federal charges, the Georgia case is a state matter, meaning that if convicted, Trump could not be pardoned by a future U.S. president. The indictment included not only Trump but a network of lawyers, aides, and political operatives, painting the alleged scheme as a sprawling conspiracy. Trump denied all wrongdoing, framing the prosecution as politically motivated, while the charges added significant legal and political pressure as he simultaneously campaigned for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
