Sweden, Norway, Denmark give $486 mln to NATO project to send US weapons to Ukraine

Sweden, Norway, and Denmark have announced a joint contribution of approximately 5 billion Norwegian crowns ($486 million) to a NATO-led project aimed at supplying Ukraine with U.S.-made weapons, according to a statement released Tuesday by the Norwegian government. The funding is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion, as the war enters a critical phase marked by heavy fighting and escalating international involvement.

The initiative is part of NATO’s broader efforts to streamline military assistance to Ukraine, particularly in the form of standardized Western weaponry. The three Nordic countries have been among Ukraine's most vocal supporters and have regularly provided military, humanitarian, and financial aid since the conflict began. Their latest contribution signals continued regional commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and its ability to defend itself using NATO-compatible arms systems.

This funding will support Ukraine through a NATO-managed procurement mechanism that enables the purchase of U.S.-made weapons, potentially including advanced artillery, ammunition, and air defense systems. The collaboration among Sweden, Norway, and Denmark also underscores closer security ties among the Nordic nations, many of which have strengthened military coordination since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

While Norway and Denmark are long-time NATO members, Sweden only formally joined the alliance in 2024, following years of neutrality. Their combined support sends a strong political message of unity within the NATO alliance. The donation comes at a time when Ukraine’s military is under intense pressure and urgently needs continued supplies to maintain frontline resistance. This NATO project is designed to ensure a more predictable and coordinated flow of critical weapons to Ukrainian forces over the coming months.
