Spain replace head coach Tome after Euro 2025 final defeat

Spain’s football federation has confirmed that Montse Tome will step down as head coach of the women’s national team at the end of August, after failing to renew her contract. The decision comes just two weeks after Spain lost the Euro 2025 final to England, a tournament in which they were considered strong favourites. This defeat follows another disappointment at the 2024 Olympic Games, where Spain were knocked out by Brazil in the semi-finals and then lost to Germany in the bronze medal match.

Tome replaced Jorge Vilda in 2023 after he led Spain to their first Women’s World Cup title. Although she guided the team to a Nations League triumph in 2024, criticism grew over her tactical decisions, particularly her surprising substitutions involving star midfielder Alexia Putellas and the team’s defensive weaknesses. Many observers felt that, with Spain’s talented squad, they should have won at least one more major title during her two-year tenure.

Sonia Bermudez has been appointed as the new head coach of Spain’s women’s national team. Bermudez, capped 63 times for Spain during her playing career, represented top clubs such as Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano, and Atletico Madrid. Since retiring, she has found success as a coach, leading Spain’s Under-19 side to two European titles.

Her first challenge will come in October when Spain competes in the Nations League finals. They will face Sweden in the semi-finals, with the winner meeting either Germany or France in the final a few weeks later. Bermudez inherits a squad rich in talent and still holding the title of world champions, but expectations will be high for her to deliver immediate success.

The coaching change signals the federation’s intent to maintain Spain’s position among the elite of women’s football while addressing the shortcomings that cost them at the Euros and the Olympics. Supporters and analysts will watch closely to see if Bermudez can bring fresh ideas, defensive stability, and more effective game management to a team already brimming with attacking quality.
