Belarus announced on Tuesday that it will host joint strategic military exercises with Russia from September 12 to 16. According to the Belarusian Defence Ministry, the drills aim to test the armed forces’ capabilities, strengthen the military security of the Russia-Belarus Union State, and prepare to counter potential threats. Major General Valery Revenko stated the exercises will assess the readiness of both nations to respond to possible aggression.
The Union State is a political and military alliance between Russia and Belarus, formed to deepen cooperation between the two countries. The upcoming drills come amid heightened tensions in Eastern Europe, with Belarus’ neighbours Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia expressing concern over the security implications of such exercises. Earlier this year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned that Russia could be preparing military moves in Belarus under the cover of routine drills.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the location of the September drills had been moved away from Belarus’ western borders with NATO member states in response to security concerns from Poland and the Baltic nations. He dismissed claims that the exercises could be used to launch attacks on NATO countries as “complete nonsense.”
Major General Revenko accused NATO of using the Belarusian-Russian drills as justification for further militarisation, citing large-scale NATO exercises scheduled in Poland involving over 34,000 troops. Relations between Belarus and its western neighbours have deteriorated significantly since Russia used Belarusian territory to help launch its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

While Minsk insists the drills are defensive, their timing and scale are likely to raise further tensions with the West. The military cooperation underscores Belarus’ position as Russia’s closest ally, even as the war in Ukraine continues and regional security remains fragile. Observers will be watching closely for any signs of escalation or changes in military posture as the exercises approach.
