Ruben Amorim doesn't think Man Utd would've been ready for Champions League this season

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has admitted his side are not yet prepared to compete in the Champions League. Speaking ahead of a League Cup clash against Grimsby Town, Amorim reflected on United’s recent struggles and said the squad needs time to build a strong foundation before being able to handle both the Premier League and European competition. United finished 15th in the league last season and missed out on qualification after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur in May. Amorim said the demands of playing high-intensity Champions League fixtures alongside domestic matches would be too much for his team right now. He called for patience and development, adding that players must fight for their places to push the club forward. Despite the disappointment, Amorim expressed confidence that, in time, the team will be ready for European football once a stronger base is established. His remarks underline the scale of the rebuilding project at Old Trafford, where early season results have done little to inspire confidence. United have taken just one point from their first two league matches, losing at home to Arsenal before being held to a draw by Fulham.

Amorim also addressed United’s early season issues, pointing to defensive lapses as a key reason behind the team’s struggles. He criticised his players’ cautious approach against Fulham, which allowed their opponents to equalise after United had taken the lead. According to the coach, the squad must adopt a stronger mentality if they are to compete consistently in both domestic and European competitions. Looking ahead, Amorim emphasised the need for gradual improvement rather than rushing into European football before the squad is ready. He said there will come a time when the club must play in Europe to give every player opportunities, but stressed that stage has not yet arrived. For now, his focus is on building resilience, sharpening tactics, and raising performance levels in the league. The manager also provided an injury update, confirming that defender Noussair Mazraoui, who was sidelined during pre-season, is close to returning. Amorim said the Moroccan international is expected to resume training soon and could be available next week. His comeback would be a boost to United’s defensive options at a time when the team is struggling for stability. Despite early setbacks, Amorim remains committed to a long-term vision of progress for the club.
