Kampala, Uganda Mary Karooro Okurut, a distinguished Ugandan author, educator, and former Cabinet Minister, died on August 11, 2025, in Kampala at the age of 70. Her passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes across Uganda, where she is celebrated for her contributions to literature, education, and public service.
Born on December 8, 1954, in Bushenyi District, Okurut graduated from Makerere University with degrees in Literature and Education. She later lectured at the same institution and served as press secretary to senior government leaders. Okurut represented Bushenyi District Women’s Constituency as a Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2021 and held various ministerial positions, leaving a lasting impact on Ugandan politics.

A passionate advocate for women’s voices, Okurut founded FEMRITE, the Uganda Women Writers Association, which empowered countless female writers. Her acclaimed works, including The Invisible Weevil and The Official Wife, explored social issues and amplified women’s narratives in African literature.
Okurut’s legacy as a trailblazer in literature and governance continues to inspire generations. She is mourned by many across Uganda and beyond.
