Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been promised $100,000 and a three-bedroom flat each following their 7th FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship win in Ivory Coast. The announcement was made during a special reception held in Abuja, where Vice-President Kashim Shettima praised the team’s dedication and performance. Nigeria defeated Mali 78–64 in the final, securing both the championship and a place at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
In addition to the players, coaching and technical staff were promised $50,000 and a flat each. The celebration highlights Nigeria’s ongoing dominance in African women’s basketball and reflects growing national recognition of female athletes. President Bola Tinubu applauded the team's achievement, calling D’Tigress part of a proud tradition of Nigerian women excelling in sports from football to athletics who "never fail this nation."

While the reward announcement has been met with celebration, many Nigerians remain skeptical, pointing to a long history of unfulfilled government promises to athletes. A recent example is the federal government’s 31-year delay in delivering housing to members of the 1994 Super Eagles squad, some of whom died before receiving their rewards.
The public has questioned whether D’Tigress will receive their benefits promptly or face similar delays. Critics argue that while recognition is deserved, large cash gifts may be unsustainable, especially in light of Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges. Still, supporters insist that honoring athletes is essential to encouraging youth and promoting national pride.

The promises have ignited debate over accountability and the importance of timely reward systems in Nigerian sports. As celebrations fade, all eyes will be on whether the government delivers and how soon.
