Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon apologises after red card in Liverpool defeat

Anthony Gordon has apologised to Newcastle United supporters, his teammates and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after receiving a red card in the Premier League clash at St James’ Park. The match ended in a 3-2 defeat for Newcastle against the reigning champions. Gordon was sent off in first half stoppage time after a rash challenge on Van Dijk left visible stud marks on the Dutch defender’s calf. Referee Simon Hooper initially showed him a yellow card but VAR intervened and upgraded the decision to a straight red.

After the match, the forward posted an apology on social media explaining his side of the incident. Gordon wrote that his intentions were never to hurt anyone and that his tackle was badly timed in a moment where he was simply trying to inject energy into the game. The twenty four year old added that he had spoken to Van Dijk after the match and made it clear he would never deliberately make such a dangerous challenge. Newcastle had to play with ten men for more than half the match and the incident became a turning point in the game.

Despite being reduced to ten players, Newcastle fought hard to recover from a two goal deficit against Liverpool. The team showed resilience and managed to level the score but their efforts fell short in the final moments of the match. Liverpool’s young winger Rio Ngumoha, only sixteen years old, scored a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time to secure a 3-2 victory for the champions.

The late goal ended Newcastle’s hopes of securing a point and left supporters frustrated after such a determined fightback. The dismissal of Gordon had a major impact, leaving his teammates with extra work and fewer attacking options. His apology aimed to acknowledge the consequences of his mistake while also assuring fans and Van Dijk that the tackle was not intentional.

The England international stressed that he is focused on learning from the incident and avoiding similar errors in the future. Newcastle manager and players will now look ahead to their next Premier League fixture against Leeds United, where they will hope to bounce back quickly. Gordon’s suspension will be a setback but the club will expect other attackers to step up in his absence as they try to regain momentum.
