John Cena Says Hair Transplant "Changed the Course of My Life"

In a candid interview with People on August 6, wrestling icon John Cena reflected on his upcoming 2025 retirement and the realities of aging in the public eye. The 17-time WWE World Champion explained that slowing down physically was a key factor in his decision, saying he’d promised himself he would step aside when no longer at his peak. “There will be kids just as hungry as I was who have earned a shot,” Cena said, adding that his focus now is on his health and four-year marriage to Shay Shariatzadeh.

Cena’s farewell tour will act as a final thank-you to his loyal fanbase, whom he credits for keeping him motivated throughout his career. He praised their passion and high expectations, noting that wrestling fans “don’t let you get away with phoning it in.” While wrestling will soon be in his past, Cena is already making the transition to more acting roles, with appearances in action hits like Fast & Furious, upcoming film Heads of State, and comedies including Vacation Friends 2 and Barbie.

Cena also addressed a personal topic that has recently drawn attention: his hair transplant. For years, he tried to hide his thinning hair, but fan signs like “The bald John Cena” pushed him to explore options. In November 2024, he underwent a transplant and began a strict haircare routine that includes red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, and special shampoos.

He admitted he wished he’d acted sooner, blaming the stigma around cosmetic procedures for the delay. “Seven or eight out of 10 men suffer from thinning or baldness,” Cena noted, adding that the procedure “completely changed the course of my life.” Now, instead of feeling embarrassed, he’s “fired up” about discussing it openly, hoping to help others facing similar struggles.

Beyond boosting his self-esteem, Cena believes the change has expanded his acting range. “A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do,” he said. For Cena, the transplant wasn’t just about appearance  it was about keeping doors open for his post-wrestling career while feeling his best in and out of the spotlight.
