Jet Li, born Li Lianjie on April 26, 1963, in Beijing, China, grew up in a poor family as the youngest of five children. His father died when he was just two years old, leaving his mother to raise the family in difficult conditions. As a child, Li showed exceptional athletic ability and was enrolled in the Beijing Wushu Academy at the age of eight. Under the guidance of renowned coach Wu Bin, he became a national martial arts champion by the age of 11, winning several gold medals and representing China internationally. His skill, discipline, and charisma made him a standout in the world of wushu, despite never competing professionally in combat sports.

Li’s transition from sports to acting began in the early 1980s when he starred in his debut film, "Shaolin Temple" (1982), which was a massive hit and sparked a wave of martial arts films in China. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he cemented his status as one of Asia’s biggest action stars with classics like "Once Upon a Time in China" (as the legendary Wong Fei-hung), "Fist of Legend", and "Tai Chi Master". His precise martial arts style, combined with a calm but intense screen presence, made him a unique figure in the industry. By the late 1990s, his fame caught the attention of Hollywood.

In 1998, Li made his Hollywood debut as a villain in "Lethal Weapon 4", showcasing his incredible speed and fighting skills. This was followed by starring roles in American productions like "Romeo Must Die" (2000), "Kiss of the Dragon" (2001), "The One" (2001), and "Cradle 2 the Grave" (2003). His ability to blend Eastern martial arts choreography with Western-style action cinema helped introduce him to a global audience. Li also displayed versatility in films such as "Hero" (2002) and "Fearless" (2006), which were critically acclaimed for their storytelling and artistry. He later joined the all-star cast of "The Expendables" franchise alongside Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and others.

Over his career, Jet Li has received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions to cinema, including the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor and international honors for promoting Chinese martial arts culture. Beyond acting, he has also been active in philanthropy, founding the One Foundation, which focuses on disaster relief, children's welfare, and education. In 2009, he was named one of the “Heroes of Philanthropy” by Forbes Asia. His influence has extended beyond the screen, inspiring generations of martial artists and action stars.

Li’s life has not been without controversy and challenges. He has faced persistent rumors about his health, especially after revealing in 2013 that he suffers from hyperthyroidism, a condition affecting metabolism and causing fatigue. Some media outlets exaggerated claims about his illness, leading to viral images suggesting he was frail, which he later clarified. Additionally, his personal life drew attention when he divorced his first wife, Huang Qiuyan, and married actress Nina Li Chi, leading to gossip in Chinese tabloids, though Li has largely avoided scandal compared to other celebrities.

As of today, Jet Li has significantly reduced his on-screen appearances, focusing more on charitable work, business ventures, and personal well-being. He occasionally appears in interviews and at public events, often speaking about the importance of spiritual balance, health, and giving back to society. While no longer as active in action cinema, his legacy as one of the greatest martial arts stars in film history remains intact, and his influence continues to shape both Eastern and Western action filmmaking.
