(In the U.K) Jonathan Gullis Sparks Debate Over Flag Display

Former Stoke-on-Trent North MP and current Kidsgrove Mayor Jonathan Gullis has stirred controversy after remarks on Good Morning Britain insisting that only the Union Jack should be flown in the United Kingdom. Gullis said he was “sick to the back of his teeth” of seeing Palestinian flags displayed in cities such as Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham, arguing that the UK should allow “our flag and our flag only.”

His comments followed criticism of Birmingham City Council, which recently removed British flags from lampposts while leaving Palestinian flags, citing safety concerns. The move reignited a wider debate about which symbols are acceptable in public spaces.

Actor and presenter Adil Ray challenged Gullis’s position, noting that flags such as the Irish tricolour are regularly flown in British cities during St Patrick’s Day celebrations. The exchange has intensified national discussions over identity, inclusivity, and political expression in the UK.
