Tebogo Malaka, the suspended CEO of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), is at the center of a major controversy in South Africa after being recorded allegedly attempting to bribe Daily Maverick investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh with R60,000. The offer, made alongside IDT spokesperson Phasha Makgolane, was intended to halt Myburgh’s investigation into an IDT contract linked to Malaka’s dealings.

The incident, which took place at a Stellenbosch wine farm on August 3, 2025, was captured on video and published by Daily Maverick. According to Myburgh, Malaka and Makgolane not only offered the initial R60,000 but also promised additional payments to suppress the probe, which focused on irregularities in an IDT contract and Malaka’s luxury property in Midrand’s Waterfall Country Estate.
Malaka’s suspension from the IDT, effective August 1, 2025, followed a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) forensic investigation into an R836 million oxygen plant tender plagued by procurement irregularities. The report highlighted Malaka’s failure to address red flags and ensure proper oversight, prompting disciplinary recommendations. The scandal has fueled public outrage, with Malaka’s actions trending widely across South Africa as a stark example of alleged corruption within public institutions.
