(In Nigeria) Reuben Abati Ignites Ethnic Controversy

Arise TV anchor Reuben Abati has ignited a firestorm of debate in Nigeria with provocative comments about the Igbo and Northern political sentiments. Abati claimed that the North would reject a one-term presidency associated with Peter Obi, asserting that the civil war's tensions linger and that Northerners, dissatisfied with a Yoruba president, would never support an Igbo leader. His remarks have fueled heated discussions on social media, exacerbating ethnic and political divides.

This is not Abati’s first brush with controversy. In 2024, he faced criticism for alleging that Igbos refuse to sell land to outsiders, referencing a personal anecdote involving the late T.O.S. Benson. Despite widespread condemnation for promoting stereotypes and division, Abati doubled down, dismissing critics. Many Nigerians have since labeled his comments as outdated and inflammatory, intensifying calls for more unifying discourse in the nation’s media.
