Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is making headlines as a rising opposition force, openly challenging President William Ruto’s administration over alleged abductions, corruption, and poor governance.
At the center of his growing political influence is the “Tawe” movement a Swahili term meaning “No” which has quickly gained momentum across Western Kenya. Positioned as a rejection of bad leadership, the slogan has become a rallying cry for frustrated citizens.
Despite facing corruption allegations and a recent arrest by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over the alleged misappropriation of KSh1.4 billion in county funds, Natembeya’s popularity appears undeterred. His arrest sparked widespread protests from supporters, highlighting his grassroots appeal.
However, his defiance has also triggered strong political backlash. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called for Natembeya’s impeachment, accusing him of incitement and abuse of office.
As public support for “Tawe” surges, Natembeya has become a polarizing figure seen by some as a reformist voice, and by others as a destabilizing force in Kenyan politics.
